Mbarara regional referral Hospital has suspended vital operations unstable power supply and insufficient power backup systems at the facility.

Dr. Celestine Barigye, the Hospital director says the hospital does cannot afford to fuel a standby generator to run vital machines in the theater, the accident and emergency wards in the absence of power supplied off the national grid.

Mbarara Hospital serves the districts of Mbarara, Bushenyi, Ntungamo, Kiruhura, Ibanda and Isingiro. It also serves as the teaching hospital for Mbarara University of Science and Technology.

However, over the last three months, its services were crippled by the unstable power supply caused by ongoing rehabilitation works on the 80kms Masaka-Mbarara supply line.

But Barigye argues that the prolonged power blackouts may degenerate into a catastrophe if the situation is not handled with urgency. At the moment, the hospital's C.T scan and the X-Ray machines are grounded after effects of power failures in the months of July and August 2014.
