Atleast 103 disadvantaged students from Nakaseke district have received bursaries to pursue further studies at the Metropolitan International University. The students are drawn from Kiwoko, Kikamulo, Semuto, Butalangu , Kinyogogga and Kito among other sub counties in Nakaseke district.

The students will pursue either diplomas or bachelors in agriculture, pharmacy, engineering, education and accounting among others. The students acquired the bursaries through Kyofa Foundation, which is run by the State Minister for Kampala Metropolitan Affairs, Kabuye Kyofatogabye.

On Sunday, Kyofatogabye handed over the admission letters to the successful students to start their studies on August, 5th next week. Kyofatogabye said that the students will acquire knowledge and skills that will enable them to compete favorably in the job market.

He said although the government offered free education at both Primary and secondary levels, several students were unable to pursue further education because of the high tuition and limited government scholarships. Kyofatogabye said that as a result, he partnered with the Metropolitan International University-Kampala campus where he contributed to allow the students to complete their cycle of education.

He cautioned the beneficiaries against engaging in sexual activities and bad peer groups, which may affect their education at the university. “The only way we can change and develop Nakaseke district is through educating our children . So once you graduate always remember to return to your communities and transform them,” Kyofatogabye told the students.

Hussein Mukibi a student from Lumpewe village in Kikamulo sub county welcomed the opportunity after securing a bursary to pursue bachelors in accounting and finance following his failed attempt in 2023 due to lack of tuition. “I applied for the same course in another university last year but I failed to enroll over lack of tuition. Am happy that i will be able to pursue it through the bursary from Kyofa foundation,” Mukibi said

Nathan Odie, a resident of Kiwoko town said he has been yearning to pursue bachelor’s in education but lacked tuition and was excited to be selected for a bursary opportunity by the foundation. Margaret Katushabe, a student from Wakayamba village in Kikamulo sub county will pursue a diploma in pharmacy and was also grateful for the opportunity.

Joshua Ssemaganda, another student said that without the bursary, he had no plan to study further after failing to raise the required tuition and other requirements. Ssemaganda added that they will remain committed and disciplined to ensure the University as well as the foundation supports them through out the course. Jane Nakazzi, a parent said that the opportunity was a great relief for poor students who were likely to drop out of school due to lack of tuition.
