Bishop Calist Rubaramira of Kabale Diocese was inaugurated on Saturday afternoon as the first Chancellor of St. Ignatius University Kabale (IGUKA).
The Catholic-founded university was established in January 2024 after securing a charter from the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) in August 2023. The university aims to extend education services closer to the community in the Kigezi region, as well as neighboring districts and countries. Currently, IGUKA has an enrollment of 170 students.
During the inauguration, which took place at the university grounds in Mwanjari, Southern Division, Kabale District, Rubaramira was joined by Rev. Fr. Associate Professor Maximiano Ngabirano, who was installed as the Vice Chancellor. In his address, Bishop Rubaramira pledged to uphold the aspirations that drive students to seek education, ensuring their future success.
Presiding over the ceremony, Colonel (retired) Tom Butime, the Minister of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities, represented Vice President Jesca Alupo.
He emphasized the importance of universities offering programs based on research and innovation, so that learners can become productive citizens contributing to Uganda’s development agenda.
