Police in Rukungiri District are holding four individuals for allegedly killing a 30-year-old man, Nazario Mwesigwa, in a bar brawl over a woman. The suspects are Quraisi Muyambi alias Cooler, Pius Kyarisiima, Ivan Tukundane, and Agatha Ninsiima.
The incident occurred on June 23, 2024, at around 4:22 PM at Agatha Ninsiima’s bar in Kibale Village, Karangaro Ward, Western Division, Rukungiri Municipality. The conflict began when the suspects attempted to persuade Mwesigwa and others in the bar to leave by offering them crude waragi worth 500 shillings and cigarettes worth 300 shillings, so they could have time alone with Ninsiima.
Mwesigwa refused the offer, asserting that he had been buying alcohol for Ninsiima. This led to a quarrel that escalated into a physical fight. The suspects overpowered Mwesigwa until David Kamigane, a neighbor of the bar, intervened to chase them away.
Mwesigwa managed to stagger home but failed to enter his house. When his mother, Scovia Nabagereka, inquired about what had happened, Mwesigwa recounted the assault before passing away moments later.
Elly Maate, the police spokesperson for the Kigezi region, confirmed the incident. The suspects are being detained at Rukungiri Police Station as investigations continue. The case is registered at Rukungiri Police Station under file number CRB 768/2024.
