The Inspector General of Government (IGG), Beti Olive Kamya Namisango, has issued a stern warning about the pervasive nature of corruption in Uganda. Speaking at a workshop for broadcasters held at Mbale Resort Hotel, Kamya outlined the devastating impact corruption has on the nation’s development and called for decisive action from all sectors of society.
Addressing the gathering, Kamya emphasized how corruption has evolved from being a minor issue into a significant threat to Uganda’s progress. She revealed a shocking estimate: Uganda loses approximately 10 trillion shillings annually to corrupt practices. This staggering loss not only cripples economic growth but also undermines social development, limiting opportunities and services for ordinary citizens.
The IGG urged Ugandans to take a proactive stance against corruption, emphasizing the need for citizens to report any corrupt activities and hold public officials accountable for their actions. She underscored the role of media and broadcasters in shaping public opinion and raising awareness about corruption-related issues.
Highlighting corruption’s impact on daily life, Namisango explained that it hinders access to essential services such as quality healthcare and education and undermines the rule of law. She called for a collective national effort to combat corruption, stressing that only through unity and vigilance can Uganda secure a prosperous and equitable future.
