Vidullanka, a Sri Lankan-based company operating the Muvumbe Small Hydro Power Project in Maziba Sub County, Kabale District, has handed over structures worth 60.8 million shillings to Kahondo Government Primary School to boost education in the area.

The newly provided structures include two permanent classroom blocks and an administration block. Bruce Rwakaryoto, the manager of the hydropower project, stated that the company decided to construct these structures after parents requested assistance due to a shortage of proper facilities at the school, which serves the communities of Kahondo and Mukokye parishes. Rwakaryoto emphasized that they could not stand by while students studied under unfavorable conditions.

Elias Byaruhanga, the headteacher of the school, welcomed the contribution, noting that the school, which currently has an enrollment of 656 pupils, had been operating with dilapidated classrooms featuring dusty floors, leaking roofs, and cracked walls. He expressed optimism that the new classrooms would provide a more conducive learning environment for the pupils.

Onesmus Mutungi, the Maziba Sub County LC3 Chairman, requested additional support from the company. He proposed the expansion of the road connecting Kahondo to the nearby Bukinda Sub County, as well as the Kamuhiigi-Kahondo road, to improve transport in the area. He also appealed for the construction of staff houses at Kavu Kavu Health Centre II to prevent health workers from needing to rent accommodations. Additionally, he urged the company to collaborate with the government to facilitate further power distribution in the area.

In response, Rwakaryoto explained that it was not feasible for the company to take on the responsibilities of the Kabale District local government by constructing roads. He also clarified that the company’s role is limited to power generation, not distribution.
