Makerere University is set to host the 7th edition of the Kampala Geopolitics Conference from October 23rd to 24th, 2024, at the Yusuf Lule Central Teaching Facility Auditorium. The conference, titled “The African Dimensions in International Debates,” will bring together scholars, international researchers, and experts to delve into pressing geopolitical issues and trends.
This year’s conference will cover a range of key topics, including armed conflicts and peace building, exploring the intersections of war crimes, gender-based violence, and justice in conflict zones. Discussions will focus on how international mechanisms, such as the International Criminal Court (ICC), address these issues and how justice can be achieved for survivors in fragile environments.
The impact of Uganda’s expanding oil sector will also be a significant topic, with sessions examining the economic and geopolitical implications of oil revenue. Key questions will address transparency, governance, and the broader impacts of oil wealth on Uganda’s youth and democratic space.
Another major topic will be jihadism and its global networks, with discussions focusing on the challenges African states face in countering jihadist movements. The panel will explore how groups like Al-Shabaab and Boko Haram exploit regional instability and how shifting alliances influence counter-terrorism strategies.
The ongoing conflict in Sudan between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) will also be addressed, with an examination of the humanitarian crisis and potential future scenarios for Sudan. The role of Uganda in fostering peace will be a key focus.
Organized by Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) in collaboration with Alliance Francaise Kampala, the French Embassy in Uganda, and Makerere University, the Kampala Geopolitics Conference has established itself as a major event on Uganda’s intellectual calendar. Last week, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to formalize the partnership between the sponsors.
His Excellency Xavier Sticker, Ambassador of France to Uganda, highlighted the significance of the French Embassy’s involvement. “The Embassy, as a principal partner, will significantly contribute to discussions on human rights, war crimes, and international justice,” he said.
Prof. Buyinza Mukadasi from Makerere University emphasized the conference’s role in fostering intercontinental debates on contemporary issues and the importance of research in shaping the global agenda.
Mr. Nils Wörmer, Director of the Regional Programme Security Dialogue for East Africa at Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, noted the organization’s focus on critical topics such as the Sudanese conflict, regional terrorism, and jihadism. He emphasized their importance to Uganda and the East African region.
Eric Touzé from Alliance Francaise Kampala reiterated the value of mutual debates, noting that the conference aligns with their mission to cultivate knowledge through conflict resolution. The Kampala Geopolitics Conference has gained a reputation for hosting in-depth debates on global issues. Past editions have covered topics like climate change, digitalization, and global health crises, featuring high-level speakers who contribute diverse perspectives.
While this year’s list of speakers has not yet been officially announced, organizers have indicated that it will be released soon, adding to the anticipation surrounding the event.
