Sheikh Muhammad Haruna Bukenya has been named the new Second Deputy Mufti of Uganda.
His appointment was announced by Dr. Ziyad Lubanga, the Director of Sharia at the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), during a ceremony on Thursday.
Dr. Bukenya takes over from Sheikh Muhammad Waiswa, who was elevated to the position of Deputy Mufti after the impeachment of Sheikh Abdullah Ssemambo.
His selection followed a competitive process involving several candidates, including Sheikh Muhammad Hood Ggaliwango, the Kadhi of Lubaga Muslim District, and Sheikh Abdukarim Katamba, Director of Sharia and Regional Assistant to the Mufti for Ankole-Kigezi Muslim Region.
Previously, Dr. Bukenya held the position of Kadhi of Kayunga Muslim District, located in the East Buganda Muslim Region.
