Three senior six male candidates from Kigezi High School in Kabale district, accused of causing grievous harm to a senior one student, were released on court bail on Thursday evening.

The accused, Japhes Owoyesiga (19) from Rwamucucu sub-county in Rukiga district, Lucy Ainebyoona (20) from Rwamagara village in Mayengo parish, Kamuganguzi sub-county, Kabale district, and Hosea Kwetegyeka (20) from Nyaruhenga in Kanyantorogo sub-county, Kanungu district, had been remanded to Ndorwa Government Prison on June 11, 2024.

The trio allegedly assaulted and caused grievous harm to Anselem Akampurira, a senior one student, during a bullying incident on November 23, 2023. They pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Their initial bail application was denied by Grade One Magistrate Julius Mutabaazi due to issues with the sureties. Mutabaazi noted that Owoyesiga had presented a tenant in his father’s house instead of his biological father, stating that a tenant has no authority over the landlord’s children.

Additionally, one of Ainebyoona’s sureties lacked an introductory letter from the LC1 chairman of his residence and did not provide a work identity card to prove his employment as a teacher at Kigezi High School.

On Thursday evening, His Worship Mutabaazi granted the trio bail at no cost. However, two sureties for each accused were required to post 500,000 shillings in cash and 5 million shillings non-cash. The case has been adjourned until July 18, 2024.
