A 28-year-old man accused of killing his father in Kanungu district over a dispute regarding coffee has fled to the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo, according to police investigations.

Amosi Niwagaba, a resident of Kyeshero Central Village in Central Parish, Kyeshero Sub County, assaulted his father, Emmanuel Bareeba, 73, on July 4, 2024, at around 2:00 PM. This altercation occurred after Bareeba accused Niwagaba of stealing and selling his harvested coffee.

According to Andrew Munyantware, the Kyeshero Central Village LC1 Chairman, Niwagaba allegedly used a stick to severely hit Bareeba in the ribs and stomach. Bareeba was rushed to Bwindi Community Hospital for treatment but unfortunately died on Monday, July 8, 2024.

Elly Maate, the police spokesperson for the Kigezi region, informed reporters on Thursday that Niwagaba fled to DR Congo after learning of his father’s death.

Maate added that investigations are ongoing, and efforts to arrest the suspect through Interpol are in progress. The case is registered at Kyeshero Police Post under file number SD 06/08/07/2024.
