A 40-year-old mechanic in Kanungu District is in trouble for killing a 47-year-old mason over allegations of stealing UGX 30,000.
On July 28, 2024, around 2:00 PM at Kyiyanja Trading Centre, Ivan Byaruhanga, a resident of Kyijanga Village, Rutugunda Parish in Kirima Sub County, seriously assaulted Swaleh Banyenzaki, a fellow resident, accusing him of stealing UGX 30,000 from his pocket.
However, it was later established that the money had been stolen by Byaruhanga’s wife and was subsequently recovered.
Byaruhanga asked for forgiveness and bought Banyenzaki soda and a stick of roasted meat worth UGX 2,000 to apologize.
Banyenzaki was also taken to a nearby drug shop, where he received first aid before being taken home.
However, according to area resident Saniya Korugyendo, Banyenzaki’s health later deteriorated, and he passed away on the evening of August 1, 2024.
Elly Maate, police spokesperson for the Kigezi region, confirmed the incident, stating that Byaruhanga has been arrested and is being held at Kanungu Police Station as investigations continue. The case is registered at Kanungu Police Station under file number CRB/488/2024.
