Mbale Heroes FC secured their long-awaited return to the Ugandan Premier League (UPL) after a dramatic 2-1 victory over Onduparaka FC at Mbale Stadium on Sunday.

The win, witnessed by over 15,000 jubilant fans, marks the end of a 17-year absence from the top flight for the Eastern Ugandan club.

Mbale Heroes wasted no time asserting their dominance. In the 23rd minute, Faizal Kiberu stepped up for a long-range heroic free kick set the tone and unleashed a powerful shot that beat the Onduparaka goalkeeper, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.

The first half was a showcase of tactical prowess and technical skill from both sides. Numerous scoring opportunities were created, but the defenses held firm until Kiberu’s breakthrough.

The intensity remained high throughout, with Mbale Heroes taking control after the opening goal. Daniel Shabena doubled Mbale Heroes’ lead in the 69th minute, effectively extinguishing Onduparaka’s hopes of a comeback.

The visitors, however, didn’t give up without a fight. James Jarieok’s headed goal in the 85th minute instilled a sense of urgency in the Mbale Heroes defense, but they held on for the crucial victory.

A jubilant Mbale Heroes coach, Gerard Ddungu, attributed the win to divine intervention and praised his players, fans, and management for their unwavering teamwork.

“We were well-prepared to achieve this victory,” Ddungu declared. However, he cast a shadow of uncertainty over his future, stating, “My job bringing them back from the regional level is done.”

Onduparaka head coach Ahmed Gorim Olima commended his players for their effort. Onduparaka Vows to Return, despite the loss.  “The struggle continues,” Olima asserted. “We’ll qualify next season.”
