The Ministry of Works and Transport (MoWT) has given car dealers and bond operators 30 days starting June 27, 2025, to vacate the Nakawa-Banda-Kireka section of the road reserve along the Kampala-Jinja Highway.
The directive is part of a planned enforcement operation to clear encroachments blamed for traffic congestion, blocked drainage, and road safety hazards. The Ministry cites Section 16(1) of the Roads Act, 2019, which prohibits unauthorized occupation of road reserves.
However, the notice falls short of addressing how the planned evictions will affect the operations and livelihoods of the affected car bond businesses.
The Ministry is invoking Section 24(1) of the Act to provide a grace period for voluntary compliance. After this period, evictions and removals of unauthorized structures will proceed at the owners’ cost.
Officials say the exercise is aimed at restoring the functionality, safety, and integrity of this key section of the national road network.
