President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has called on the people of the Busoga sub-region to adopt sustainable practices for utilizing wetlands, stressing the importance of environmental protection. He made this appeal on Sunday, September 8, 2024, while addressing the Universal Church Mega Youth Crusade at Kirama Memorial Grounds in Kaliro, where he was the chief guest. The event was organized by Prophet Daudi Isanga under the theme “Remember your creator in the days of your youth, before the day of evil comes” (Ecclesiastes 12:1) and was attended by members of the Patriotic Youths.
In response to a plea from Kaliro District Woman Representative Brenda Namukuta, who requested leniency for the Basoga people, particularly in Kaliro, for encroaching on wetlands, President Museveni advised exploring alternative, eco-friendly income-generating activities. He suggested transitioning from swamp farming to pond-based farming, which he explained could both improve household incomes and protect the environment.
The President also outlined seven plans to boost homestead incomes, including planting coffee, fruits, and food crops. He cited the success of Limoto in Pallisa District as a model for sustainable agricultural practices. Additionally, President Museveni assured the Universal Apostles Fellowship Church that he would waive the requirement for churches to renew their registration. He also pledged to contribute 100 million Ugandan shillings to the church’s Sacco.
Nabi Daudi, the leader of the Universal Apostles Fellowship Church, praised President Museveni for maintaining peace in Uganda and for his continued support. During the event, the youths of the Universal Apostles Church surprised Apostle David with a brand-new car in the presence of the President, as a token of gratitude for his dedication to grooming young people and serving the community.
In his remarks, Apostle David expressed deep appreciation for the gift and shared that he has always encouraged youths to work hard and take advantage of government programs. He commended President Museveni for ensuring peace in the country and addressed criticisms from some who accused him of being a rebel, claiming he had no followers and was a liar. He highlighted his efforts in training and mentoring youths, particularly in Nakaseke, and thanked the President for supporting his initiatives.
