New Campaign Highlights Essential Toddler Skincare Practices in Uganda

Neonatal skincare in Uganda faces unique challenges due to cultural beliefs and local practices. Research shows that while some traditions can benefit baby care, others may expose children to infections, leading to long-term health complications.

This issue has become particularly significant as many Ugandan children under five experience skin-related issues such as eczema, diaper rash, and allergic reactions. These conditions affect nearly one in three children, and Uganda’s tropical climate further exacerbates them.

A study conducted by the Ministry of Health highlights the high incidence of skin problems in young children, particularly because their skin is up to 30% thinner than adults. These sensitivities can lead to discomfort, infections, and long-term skin conditions if not managed properly. In response to this growing concern, Cussons Baby Uganda has launched the “Share the Joy” campaign, aimed at educating Ugandan mothers on proper baby skincare.

The three-month campaign, organized by African Queen, focuses on equipping parents with essential knowledge and practical tips to care for their babies’ delicate skin. It also offers opportunities for mothers to engage with pediatricians familiar with local health challenges. Speaking at the campaign launch, Dr. Irene Bagala, Manager of Global Health Uganda, emphasized the importance of avoiding harmful skincare products.

“One of the most common issues we see is children developing rashes. While some rashes are normal, others stem from infections or using the wrong products on the baby’s skin. Avoid products with aluminum or steroids, as they can cause adverse reactions,” Dr. Bagala advised.

Dr. Bagala also warned parents about relying on the internet for medical advice. “Many mothers think they can turn to the internet for solutions, but this can be dangerous. It’s important to take children to hospitals for proper diagnosis rather than self-medicating based on unreliable information online.”

Nabwami Mariam, Head of PZ Cussons Uganda, explained that the “Share the Joy” campaign aims not only to reward loyal customers but also to empower mothers with expert advice on child skincare. “We want to reward our customers while ensuring they have access to the right information and tools to keep their babies healthy,” she said.

By promoting awareness and providing resources, the “Share the Joy” campaign hopes to address the high prevalence of skin issues in Ugandan children and ensure healthier, happier babies across the country.
