Supporters and leaders subscribing to the National Unity Platform (NUP) party on Thursday supporters engaged in an exchange of bitter words and feud with security authorities, over driving a convoy through Kabale main street.
This was during the NUP party leaders led by their president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine, nationwide mobilization campaign in Kabale district. Police first blocked the road opposite National Social Security Fund (NSSF) offices in Kigongi, along the Kabale-Mbarara highway, and ordered Kyagulanyi and his supporters to use the road connecting Makanga Hill and proceed to Esso.
However, NUP leaders and supporters led by Joel Besekezi Ssenyonyi, party spokesperson, and David Lewis Rubongoya, party general secretary objected to the orders and questioned security to explain why they didn’t want a drive through Kabale main street but instead wanted them to use the road where there are no people.
The bitter exchange of words between NUP leaders and security authorities led by Ibrahim Saiga, Kigezi Region Police Commander, Henry Kisembo, Kigezi Region Field Force Unit (FFU) Commander, Abel Ruganza,Kabale District Police Commander and Reuben Mutabazi,Kabale District Internal Security Officer lasted for about 30 minutes. This led NUP leaders led by Kyagulanyi to beat security and walk through Kabale up to the Kabale-Katuna roundabout. Police also blocked them opposite Royal Supermarket but NUP defied and proceeded.
