The 2009/10 National Household survey claims that there are 1.3 million old people in Uganda that is people over the age of 60, an increase from the 1.2 million in the 2005/06 survey. This increase follows a trend elsewhere around the world and supports projections that suggest that in the next 40 years there will be more old people than young people. The consequences of this reality bear consideration given the fact that the elderly are largely poor, sick, neglected and have to raise children abandoned by their parents. What is government’s response to this reality?
