Police in the Kigezi region have launched investigations into two separate incidents of murder that occurred in Kanungu and Rukungiri districts.
The first incident involved the death of a 43-year-old man, Javira Tushabomwe, in Kishunju village, Nyakatunguru Ward, Kihihi Town Council, Kanungu District. On the night of August 15, 2024, Tushabomwe was assaulted by his cohabitant, Fomia Tumuheirwe, after a domestic quarrel.
Tushabomwe sustained critical head injuries during the fight but did not seek immediate medical attention. His condition worsened, and on August 18, 2024, he was taken to Kihihi Health Centre IV.
Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries on the morning of August 21, 2024. The case has been registered at Kihihi Police Station under file number CRB 330/2024.
The second incident occurred in Nyakagyera village, Burora Parish, Nyarushanje Sub County, Rukungiri District. A 16-year-old boy, Elias Ahereza, was allegedly locked inside a house by his stepmother, Regis Ninsiima, for seven days without food.
Concerned neighbors noticed Ahereza’s absence and, upon searching, discovered him locked inside the house on August 19, 2024. He was immediately rushed to Kebisoni Health Centre IV and later referred to Kisiizi Hospital.
Ahereza died on August 20, 2024. This case is registered at Rukungiri Police Station under file number 979/2024.
Elly Maate, the police spokesperson for the Kigezi region, confirmed that Tumuheirwe and Ninsiima are currently in custody at Kanungu and Rukungiri police stations, respectively, awaiting court proceedings.
