A groundbreaking partnership between Redeem International and the Uganda Police Force offers renewed hope to widows and orphans in districts like Mbale, Sironko, Manafwa, Bududa, and Namisindwa. The collaboration focuses on safeguarding these vulnerable groups from exploitation in land disputes.

Widows and orphans are frequently subjected to intimidation and manipulation, losing their rightful land to powerful individuals within their families and communities. Redeem International, through its free legal aid program, is stepping in to ensure that victims can pursue justice without fear or financial burden.

“Widows and orphans endure untold suffering due to land disputes. Many are too scared to come forward, and those who do often lack the resources to fight back. Our collaboration with the Uganda Police provides them with a safe platform to seek justice,” said Mr. Manana Vindikate, Head of Communications at Redeem International.

Inspector of Police David Wekona, the Community Liaison Officer at Sironko Central Police Station, underscored the police’s dedication to building trust and offering protection. “We understand the fear victims face when reporting cases. The police are committed to creating an environment where victims feel secure enough to voice their struggles. However, we urge complainants to provide sufficient evidence so we can hold offenders accountable,” Wekona emphasized.

The challenges of land disputes are often compounded by interference from local leaders, placing already vulnerable families at a further disadvantage. This partnership aims to mitigate these obstacles by reinforcing police support for victims and ensuring all parties involved are held accountable.

Despite ongoing issues like delays in case resolutions, the influence of elite figures, and the pervasive fear among victims, Redeem International and the Uganda Police are steadfast in their mission. Their collaboration is a beacon of hope, working toward a future where widows and orphans in Eastern Uganda can reclaim their rights and live with dignity. The combined efforts of both organizations underscore a shared commitment to justice, paving the way for a brighter, more secure future for these vulnerable groups.
