Prosy Mbabazi Akampurira, the Rubanda District Woman Member of Parliament and one of the parliamentary commissioners facing censure over a service award of 400 million Shillings, has stated that she utilized the money to initiate a poverty eradication program in her District.

Akampurira made this revelation during the belated District International Women’s Day celebrations in Kachereere town council on Friday. The event saw a cold reception for Akampurira as security authorities led by Superintendent of Police Abel Barugahare and Lieutenant David Majjid, the UPDF Commander in charge of Rubanda detach, blocked some of her supporters from accessing the venue. Similarly, Rubanda County West MP Moses Kamuntu Mwongyera faced the same reception.

In her speech, Akampurira explained that the service award contributed to a 700 million shillings project called “Prosperous Women Rubanda.” This savings group aims to improve the quality of life for women who struggle with limited savings and income-generating opportunities in the district. The project targets women groups in all 461 villages in the district, ensuring that each woman receives over 300,000 shillings in capital. Launched in August 2023, the initiative seeks to enhance women’s economic status.

Akampurira criticized Lwemiyaga County MP Theodore Ssekikubo, who is collecting signatures to have the commissioners censored, accusing him of pursuing personal political agendas. She expressed confidence in receiving more awards in the future.

During the event, Kamuntu protested his exclusion, noting that Kachereere town council is within his constituency. He urged leaders to focus on development rather than political bickering.

No district leaders provided explanations for Kamuntu’s exclusion or Akampurira’s cold reception. The chief guest, Henry Musasizi Ariganyira, emphasized the need to end domestic violence and encouraged the community to embrace government poverty eradication programs such as the Parish Development Model and the Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme (UWEP).

He also highlighted the availability of government education facilities and urged parents to prioritize their children’s education for a better future.

Akampurira, along with commissioners Solomon Silwany of Bukooli Central, Esther Afoyochan of Zombo district, and Mathias Mpuuga of Masaka, is accused of awarding themselves 1.7 billion shillings as a service award.
