A Rwandan couple accused of killing an 83-year-old businessman has been charged with murder and aggravated robbery.

Desire Kwizera (26) and his wife, identified only as Uwingabire (19), allegedly murdered Godfrey Twinomujuni Ntegyire, a resident of Karujabura village in Mwendo parish, Kitumba sub-county, Kabale district, on May 31, 2024, at around 8:00 PM.

The couple had been working as Twinomujuni’s casual laborers. Twinomujuni, a well-known local porridge (Obushera and Enturire) seller in Kabale town, was found dead after the couple allegedly stole his belongings, including a mattress, iron box, radio, suitcase, bicycle, three watches, kitchen utensils, and an ATM card, valued at 2 million Ugandan shillings.

Their escape attempt failed when they reached the Uganda-Rwanda border at Chanika in Kisoro district on June 1, 2024. They were intercepted by Ugandan security officials due to their lack of travel documents. Upon investigation, it was established that they were fleeing Uganda after killing Twinomujuni.

Appearing before the court on Tuesday evening, His Worship Julius Mutabaazi, Kabale Grade One Magistrate, declined to allow the couple to take a plea, stating that the offense is capital in nature and beyond the jurisdiction of a Grade One Magistrate’s Court. Mutabaazi remanded the couple to Ndorwa Government Prison until June 27, 2024.
