A Rwandan couple is being held by police in connection with the killing of an 83-year-old businessman in Kabale district. Desire Kwizera and his wife, identified only as Uwingabire, are alleged to have killed Twinomujuni Ntegyire, a resident of Karujabura village in Mwendo parish, Kitumba sub-county, Kabale district, on May 31, 2024, at around 8:00 PM. The couple was working as Twinomujuni’s casual laborers. Twinomujuni was a well-known local porridge (Obushera and Enturire) seller in Kabale town.
It is alleged that on the day of the incident, a quarrel developed between the couple and Twinomujuni. During the argument, Twinomujuni insulted the couple in the local Rukiga language, which they did not understand, as they were fluent in Kinyarwanda. This angered the couple, leading Kwizera to pick up a knife and stab Twinomujuni in the chest. Twinomujuni died on the spot.
After the incident, the couple packed Twinomujuni’s belongings, including a mattress, an iron box, a radio, a suitcase, and a bicycle. However, their escape attempt failed when they reached the Uganda-Rwanda border at Chanika in Kisoro district on June 1, 2024. They were intercepted by Ugandan security officials due to their lack of travel documents. Upon investigation, it was established that they were fleeing Uganda after killing Twinomujuni.
On Monday evening, the police led the couple to the scene, where they admitted to the crime and demonstrated how they killed the victim. Elly Maate, the police spokesperson for the Kigezi region, stated that the couple is being held at Kabale police station as investigations continue. The case is registered at Kabale police station under file number CRB 438/2024.
