Habib Twaha Mukwatangabo, a driver for Kinkizi Development Finance Services Cooperative Savings and Credit Society Limited (Kidefise Sacco) in Kanungu district, is on the run after allegedly causing the death of a 40-year-old man.

Mukwatangabo was driving a Toyota Hilux double-cabin vehicle with the registration number UBJ 100J on Sunday evening, September 16, 2024, around 7:30 PM along the Kanungu-Kihihi road. Upon reaching Kabashaki village in Kirima Sub County, he reportedly struck Edson Kayakole, a resident of Katete village in Mitooma district.

Kayakole had traveled earlier in the day from Mitooma to Kanungu to visit a relative named Sabitti. He was rushed to Katete Health Centre IV but succumbed to his injuries the following day. Elly Maate, the police spokesperson for the Kigezi region, confirmed the incident, stating that Mukwatangabo fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle.

Preliminary investigations suggest that Kayakole might have been under the influence of alcohol and was staggering on the road at the time of the accident. The case is recorded at Kanungu Police Station under file number TSD REF: 17/15/09/2024.
