The body of Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi, 50, the State Minister for Defense and Veteran Affairs, was laid to rest on Thursday evening at her ancestral home in Bugahe Village, Nyakabingo Parish, Chahi Sub County, Kisoro District. A seven-gun salute was accorded in her honor.
Nyirabashitsi’s casket was lowered into the grave at exactly 5:51 PM. Vice President Jessica Alupo represented President Yoweri Museveni at the final send-off.
Nyirabashitsi, who also served as the Kisoro District Woman Member of Parliament, passed away on September 7, 2024, shortly after arriving at Mengo Hospital in Kampala following a heart attack at her home, according to her father, Philemon Mateke, former Minister for Regional Cooperation, and her elder brother, Dr. Gideon Mugisha.
She was remembered as a humble and developmental leader.
