Police have arrested Brian Akanyijuka, a taxi driver on the Kabale-Katuna Rubaya route, along with his conductor, Kennedy Kyokwijuka, after a video surfaced showing them dangerously overloading a vehicle.
The Toyota Noah, registration number UBB 302E, was filmed on Friday evening while traveling from Rubaya to Kabale town, heavily loaded with cargo on its roof. Due to lack of space inside the vehicle, Kyokwijuka, the conductor, was seated on top of the vehicle.
The video, recorded by a concerned citizen, quickly went viral on social media in Kabale, drawing criticism toward local traffic police for allegedly neglecting their duties.
Elly Maate, the police spokesperson, confirmed that both the driver and conductor were apprehended on Saturday and are currently being held at Kabale Police Station. Maate emphasized the danger of having a passenger sit on top of a vehicle loaded with cargo, noting that such behavior poses a serious risk to life. He also revealed that the driver did not possess a valid driving license.
Maate added that once investigations are complete, the suspects will be presented in court to face charges.
