As parliament deliberates on the UPDF Amendment Bill (2025), which seeks to reinstate the trial of civilians in military courts, we find ourselves at a critical juncture in our nation’s commitment to constitutionalism and the rule of law. We explore how the proposed law conforms and doesn’t conform to the Supreme Court’s decision.

We bring you views from the Attorney General, some Members of Parliament, a private legal practitioner and a human rights lawyer and for context, we take the listener to the Supreme Court ruling. We find that save for the intention to have civilians tried in military courts, the law was long overdue.
