There is heightened security at the High Court Criminal Division in Kampala ahead of the expected appearance of Jamil Mukulu, the alleged leader of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebel group.

Heavily armed counter-terrorism police and prison warders have been deployed around the court premises in anticipation of his return. This marks Mukulu’s first court appearance in four years. Mukulu faces a series of grave charges, including murder, terrorism, attempted murder, aiding terrorism, crimes against humanity, and membership in a designated terrorist organization.

The former rebel leader was arrested in 2015 in Tanzania and later extradited to Uganda to answer for crimes linked to atrocities committed by the ADF, which has long been designated a terrorist group by the Ugandan government.
