Mercy Timbitwire, a Public Relations Officer at the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretariat, appeared at Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court today to face charges stemming from a viral video that surfaced last week. The video, which captured Timbitwire slapping Charles Makawa, a traffic police officer, sparked significant public interest and scrutiny.

Prosecutors have opened two separate case files against her. In the first file, Timbitwire is charged with multiple offenses, including the robbery of two mobile phones worth 800,000 shillings and an EPS machine valued at 14 million shillings, which is the property of the Uganda Police Force. Additionally, she faces charges of assaulting a police officer and being an accessory after the fact of a felony.

In the second case file, Timbitwire is confronted with charges related to reckless driving, failure to comply with a police officer’s directives, and operating a motorcycle without third-party insurance.
