Two suspects are in police custody in connection with the killing of a 30-year-old bricklayer in Rukiga District. The suspects—Fortune Nkurunungi and Brian Twinamatsiko, both residents of Rwakimuri Village in Nyakabungo Ward, Muhanga Town Council—are accused of murdering Bright Hakiri, a resident of Kishanje Parish, Bufundi Sub-county in Rubanda District.
It is alleged that on the night of May 25, 2025, at around 9:00 PM, the trio—having finished their day’s work at a construction site owned by Evalist Twebaze in Rwakimuri—went for a social gathering involving alcohol consumption at a local bar owned by a woman only identified as Ninsiima.
During the drinking session, a disagreement reportedly arose over the payment they had received from their employer. This dispute escalated into a quarrel and later a physical altercation. According to preliminary police findings, the fight continued when the group returned home.
Twinamatsiko and Nkurunungi allegedly beat Hakiri using sticks until he lost consciousness. He died shortly afterward. Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson Elly Maate confirmed the arrests and said the suspects are being detained as investigations continue.
