Two people have been killed in Rukiga and Rukungiri districts within two days.
On Tuesday night, June 25, 2024, at around 9:00 PM, Claudio Oworinawe, 62, a resident of Kabimbiri village, Kyerero parish, Bukinda sub-county, Rukiga district, was allegedly killed by Christopher Byarugaba, 42, a mason and resident of Kabimbiri village, and Fausta Tumwijukye, 51, a resident of Kyimbugu village in the same parish, over land disputes.
It is alleged that while Oworinawe was sleeping inside his house, the accused emerged and beat him to death. The case is registered at Rukiga police station under file number CRB 243/2024.
On Wednesday, June 26, 2024, at around 2:30 PM, a man in his early 30s, identified only as Ronald, a resident of Rwebikoona trading centre in Kasoroza village, Kigaga parish, Nyakagyeme sub-county, Rukungiri district, was killed by an angry mob.
He was accused of cutting and injuring his aunt, identified as Mary Bahekire, according to Sergeant Posiano Mabwijano, officer in charge of Nyakagyeme police post. The case is registered at Rukungiri police station under file number CRB 779/2024.
ASP Elly Maate, Kigezi region police spokesperson, confirmed the incidents, stating that Tumwijukye and Byarugaba have already been arrested for questioning. Maate also reported that Bahekire is admitted at Nyakibare Hospital, while Ronald’s body is lying at Rwakabengo HC2 mortuary for postmortem.
