Police in Kanungu District have launched investigations into the mysterious death of a 30-year-old woman, Atwikirize Mackline, whose lifeless body was discovered early Saturday morning in the playground of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church.
According to preliminary reports, Atwikirize, a resident of Mukirwa Village in Kinaaba Sub-county, was last seen alive on the evening of Friday, June 27, 2025.
Earlier that day, she had reportedly sold a pig and matooke for UGX 900,000 and used part of the money to buy clothes at the nearby Kinaaba market.
Later in the evening, Atwikirize was seen at a local bar drinking alcohol in the company of unidentified men. She was last seen leaving the bar around 11:00 PM, walking away with the same group of men.
Her body was discovered the following morning by children on their way to the garden.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson, says the crime scene was examined by investigators, and a sniffer dog deployed at the site led police to a suspect who is currently in custody to assist with ongoing investigations.
Maate did not reveal the identity of the suspect in order not to jeopardize the investigation.
