At least 12 passengers have sustained severe injuries after they were involved in a Kalita bus accident.

According to Bakari Muga Bashir, the police spokesperson Ruwenzori region, the accident occurred on Friday morning at around 2:00am.

Bakari said a Kalita bound bus registration Number UAK/511R rammed into a Fuso lorry registration number UAL563/L at Kisisi near Rwaibale trading centre in Kyenjojo district.

He explains that the over speeding Kalita bus was coming from Kampala to Kasese.

Bakari says it rammed into a Fuso lorry that had parked on the roadside loading timber.

The bus overturned several times leaving at least 12 passengers injured.

Bakari says no death was registered.

He explains that the accident victims were picked and rushed to Kyenjojo hospital and Kyegegwa health center IV. They were later transferred to Buhinga referral hospital where they were admitted in critical condition.

Bakra says the names of the victims could not be identified by press time.

The police says that the drivers of both Kalita bus and the lorry have gone into hiding and the police have launched a hunt for them.

He says the drivers who could not be identified abandoned their vehicles and took off for fear of being arrested. The lorry driver was said to be loading the timber at night that is being illegally cut.

Bakari said both vehicles were impounded and parked at Kyenjojo police station and alternative transportation for the passengers was found in another bus of the same company.

He attributes the accident to over speeding and he condemns drivers over speeding at night when they cannot see well.

Bakari advise the people to stop using the late night buses because they risk getting involved in accidents and being victims of robbery.
