Local players will face stiff competition when they face foreign stars from Kenya and Tanzania in the 2013 Tamiz Sangham City Tyres Badminton Open Championship that starts with action in the seniorâ€™s event tomorrow at the MTN Arena, Lugogo.
Simon Mugabi, the Chief Executive Officer of the Uganda Badminton Association (UBA), confirmed to URN on Thursday morning that eleven players from Kenya and one from Tanzania have been drawn to take part.
Among the players expected is the Kenyan top men’s player Victor Odera who has also entered the event, Mugabi revealed. He said they expect a very competitive competition with cash prizes and trophies on offer for the outstanding players.
Uganda’s top female player Shamim Bangi who missed an event last month because of a nagging ankle injury will use the championship to prepare for the Bahrain International Championship early next month. Bangi is confident she can win this competition because she has prepared well. She expects tough competition from the seed 2 Margaret Nankabirwa.
Herbert Ebayo and Yakub Musisi, the Ugandan doubles champions will however miss the event as they are in West Africa for the Nigerian International Championship which has also attracted players from Europe.
