Police in Kabale have arrested 17 suspected illegal immigrants from Rwanda. The district criminal investigations officer, Jackson Mugisha, says that the suspects were arrested on Wednesday evening, along the Uganda-Katuna border. Mugisha says that the suspects mostly women and children said they had traveled from Byumba and Ruhengyeri in Rwanda in search for land. He says that they were heading to Kyenjojo and Kibale districts to buy land. Mugisha says that the arrests are part of a continuing crackdown on illegal immigrants in Kabale district. He says that the crackdown follows consistent reports that hundreds of Rwandese illegal immigrants are sneaking into the country through the Katuna border. Mugisha says that the 17 suspects will be charged with illegal entry into the country.
