Two men in Kibaale district have been charged and remanded over assaulting a police officer. The attack left the officer unconscious. The assault on a policeman comes in the wake of increasing incidents of officers being attacked while on duty.
The two men appeared before Kakumiro Grade II Magistrate's Court presided over by Alex Luwaga on Friday.
The suspects Anthony Nabaasa (28) and Hawad Wasswa (19) are accused of assaulting a police officer Jackson Arinaitwe.
It is alleged the two men assaulted the Special Police Constable attached to Kisiita police post while he was trying to effect an arrest at Katikara trading centre.
The charge sheet indicates that the men who are all residents of Katikara trading centre, Kisita sub county, Kibaale attacked Arinaitwe with heavy sticks.
They beat up Arinaitwe until he lost consciousness.
Although Arinaitwe had his service rifle, he did not use it and neither did his attackers attempt to steal it.
The assault took place on Friday, August 23 at about 4pm.
The men were arrested and detained at Kakumiro police station after a resident tipped off the police.
Prosecution urged court to hand the men a severe sentence as a deterrence to others who might wish to do the same.
In their defence, the men denied all knowledge of the assault on Arinaitwe and insisted they were innocent.
Presiding Magistrate Luwaga sent them on three weeks remand as prosecution prepares a case against the men.
Incidents of attacks on police officers on duty have been on the rise since 2012. The latest incident was the shooting of a police officer in Kampala on Thursday, August 22.
