Two traders lost their lives on Wednesday night along the Kyankwanzi– Hoima highway after the truck they were travelling in was shot at by robbers.

The traders have been identified as Abusil Kamara and Banton Alinayo (20). Kamara was a produce dealer from Butanjwa Mparo division in Hoima. Alinayo was a chapatti vendor in Kiryatete; born in Kibaale district.

The Kyankwanzi district O/C CID Erick John Wabwire says the traders were travelling back to Hoima in a Fuso lorry truck reg. No. UAL 736/W from Lubiri market in Kyankwanzi district.

Their truck was attacked at Karagi.

The truck driver Julius Ayesiga says that they were chased down by people in a pick-up who shot at their vehicle in an attempt to make the driver stop.

The traders were shot during this confusion as Ayesiga refused to slow down.

Ayesiga says Alinayo died instantly while Kamara was shot in the chest. Kamara died on arrival at Hoima regional referral hospital.

Wabwire says police has launched investigations into the shootings. He urges traders to always hire security guards when they travel to and from markets because thieves expect them to have money at that time.

Wabwire however says they have launched the investigations into the matter but warned traders to always hire security guards whenever they travel to markets.

The incident comes on the heels of a security alert issued by the Albertine Police commander Charles Ssebambulide last week. In the alert, he noted that police was worried about three missing guns stolen from police and private security guards and thought to be in the hands of criminals.
