Police in Kanungu have arrested 20 people for allegedly holding an illegal demonstration.

They were part of a group of over 150 people who were protesting the delayed construction of the Rukungiri - Kanungu road. They had planned to trek a distance of 40 kilometers between Kihihi and Kanungu town councils before the police intercepted them.

The protestors carried placards attacking President Yoweri Museveni for failing to honor his pledge to upgrade the road to tarmac. The president made the pledge in 2011.

The arrested include Dixon Kagurusi Ampumuza, a defeated candidate in the parliamentary race for Kinkizi West and Joshua Rukundo, the Kanungu district secretary for finance, among others.

"We want to remind government them that over the years they have been making promises to tarmac the Kanungu road which was surveyed long time ago but they have consistently neglected it… making life hard for the people of Kanungu," Kagurusi said.

Kanungu district police commander Joab Wabwire told Uganda Radio Network that the demonstrators had not sought for permission from the police.

By the time of filing this story, the suspects were still being held at Kihihi Police station.
