Veteran goalkeeper Essam Kamal Tawfik El-Hadary saved two penalty kicks to help Egypt beat Burkina Faso and storm the final of the 2017 Total Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

The game had ended 1-1 in the allotted 90 minutes before the team played an extra 30 minutes but there were no more goals coming either at the L'Amitie D'Angondje Stadium.

It was the 44-year-old El-Hadary who saved Kouakou Herve Koffi and Betrand Isidore Tarore's kicks to send the Egyptians into celebrations.

Burkina Faso controlled most of the game although the seven time African champions scored first through Italian based Mohamaed Ghaly Salah with a well taken curling shot after 65 minutes.

But the Burkinabe team fought back strongly as Aristide Bance levelled matters after only seven minutes. The Egyptian defenders failed to clear the ball out of the box.

During the penalty kicks Egypt's Abdallah Mohamoud Bekhit had his effort saved before Sibiri Traore converted for Burkina Faso. Banou Diawara and Steeve Farid Yago also converted for the Burkina Faso team before their last two players had their penalties saved by the tournament's oldest player El-Hadary. Ramadan Ahmed, Ahmed Hegazy, Salah and Amr Warda all converted their penalties for Egypt.

On Thursday the 2015 losing finalists Ghana will face the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in the second semi final match at the Franceville Stadium.
