One person has been seriously injured and 35 people left homeless after their homes were destroyed during a heavy rain downpour in Imanyoro sub-county, Mayuge district.

The rain that lasted over three hours on Wednesday was characterized by hail stones and strong winds.

The most affected villages are Magunga, Luyila, Lubale, Namassake and Bupale.

The affected families are currently being housed in schools and churches while others have sought refuge with their relatives.

According to the Magunga village LC 1 chairman Patrick Musana the injured person, Farouk Menya 47, was hit by one of the iron sheets blown off the roof of a house near where he was taking shelter during the rains.

Musana says this is the second time in less than three months that the area is being devastated by heavy rains.

The Lubale village LC 1 chairman, Godfrey Ntalo says 12 acres of banana and cassava plantations have been destroyed in his village alone.
Ntalo says the situation is likely to get worse especially as the rains continue pounding the area.

The Mayuge LC 5 chairman Dakturi Bongo says the affected families are in urgent need of food, shelter and medicine.
