70 Sacred Heart SS Students Survive Nasty Accident

70 students of Sacred Heart Secondary School in Gulu district were this morning critically injured in a road accident at Aboke Sub County in Oyam district.

The students and three of their teachers were traveling to Butiaba landing site in Buliisa district for a geography field work when the tragedy occurred. 64 of them are now admitted at St Mary's hospital Lacor in Gulu while four others who were critically injured are still being treated from a health center in Aboke awaiting referral.

Anthony Ocaya, a teacher who was also aboard the ill-fated bus explains that the ISUZU bus registration number UAP 714H jerked into a ditch before swerving off the road. The Driver is now on the run.

Sister Mary Kitale the in charge emergency department at Lacor Hospital says most of the victims are now in a stable condition. She explains that only two of the admitted students are still under close monitoring.

Accident rates have been high in parts of Northern Uganda since the beginning of the year. Over 6 accidents involving buses and heavy trucks have been recorded in Gulu alone.

On February 6th, seven people died and over 31 sustained injuries in an accident in Nwoya. it was reportedly caused by overloading.  The tragedy occurred after a canter truck transporting Gulu market Vendors to Nwoya overturned in Lukutu village, Koch goma Sub County.
