Accident Claims 7 Cattle Traders in Soroti

Several people have been confirmed dead in a motor accident that occurred this morning along Soroti - Mbale road in Soroti district. The deceased, all cattle traders from Mukura Sub County in Ngora district, were travelling to Otuboi cattle market in Kaberamaido district.

There were conflicting reports on the number of victims by press time. While Eyewitnesses said the deceased were more than 10, one of the staff at Soroti Hospital confirmed that seven bodies had been taken to the Hospital Mortuary.

East Kyoga Region Police Spokesperson Michael Odongo said the police was still responding to the emergency and could not verify the numbers and particulars of the deceased persons by press time.


The accident which happened at 5:00 am left more than 10 other people critically injured and are now admitted at Soroti Regional Referral Hospital.

James Peter Obonipe, a traffic officer attached to Soroti Central Police Station told URN that the fuso lorry registration number UAQ 033 T which was speeding for the market lost control after its driver tried to avoid a head on collision with a taxi on the opposition side.

According to Obonipe, the two vehicles had been destructed by a faulty stationed fuso lorry registration number UAT 468 U which had been left in the middle of the road. "When their vehicle reached this stationed lorry, another speeding tax arrived and the driver lost control after hitting the driving mirror of the other faulty lorry," Obonipe said.

Simon Egaku, one of the residents who was found aiding casualties said that the incident was tragic.
