The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries is considering a policy that will guide proper land use for agricultural purposes.

Vincent Bamulangaki Ssempijja, the Minister of Agriculture says that the policy will ensure that the available land resource is properly utilized to effectively benefit the country.

According to Ssempijja, the new policy will put in place a comprehensive planning and land management framework which will be used to organize land use across the country.

In 205, the Food and Agricultural Organization-FAO indicated that a total 61,500 square kilometers of the Uganda's total land area can be used for farming.

But Ssempijja argues that the available arable land is not optimally utilized especially through sustainable agriculture due to lack of proper guidance.

He explains that the new policy will now require all landowners to first seek approval of government on any activities they intend to put any part of the country.

Notably, in June 2006, the ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development also developed a slightly similar National Land Use Policy with an aim of achieving sustainable socio-economic development in the country, but this has since not been effectively implemented.
