Uganda Cranes first choice goalkeeper Denis Onyango has called for total support from all stakeholders as the national team strives to break the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualification jinx.

The Cranes will face Comoros in a crucial 2017 Afcon qualifier on September 3 to determine if they make it for the competition in Gabon. Onyango told URN that after 38 years of waiting this is the time the Cranes need to break the jinx.

Onyango who also won the League title with Mamelodi Sundowns in South Africa and has helped them reach the group stage of the CAF Orange Champions League said that after getting close to qualification in the past campaigns he thinks this is the time to get it right.

"I want to be part of the generation that will take the national team back to the big stage of Afcon after our last appearance in 1978," added the experienced goalkeeper. Uganda are second in the group D with 10 points, while table leaders Burkina faso have the same number of points but a better head to head against Cranes.

The former SC Villa and St George goalkeeper also stressed that qualifying for Afcon will be a good step for the team as they start the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign in October.

"We need to qualify for Afcon and use the qualification as a launching pad for the World Cup qualifiers," reasoned Onyango. The Cranes are pooled alongside giants Egypt, Ghana and Congo Brazzaville in the World Cup qualifiers.
