A war veteran who turned up to be recruited into African Union Mission in Somalia-AMISOM- has collapsed and died in Gulu.

Forty-year-old Daniel Omoya collapsed on Monday morning while near Gulu district headquarters, as he walked from the 4th division headquarters, where he had gone to be enlisted into the Ugandan contingent of the African Union.

James Asubu, the Officer In-charge of Crime in Gulu district says that Omoya who was in the company of a friend, was headed to Gulu town from 4th Division headquarters.

Asubu explains that the friend to the late told police that they were headed to town to photocopy the army’s discharge certificate when the incident happened.

The unidentified friend who is also a war veteran told the police that they were walking on foot from 4th division headquarters to Gulu town but when they were approaching Gulu district headquarters he realized his friend was missing.

He says in a statement to police that after realizing that the friend he was walking with had gone missing he went back and found him laying dead a few metres away from Gulu district headquarters.
The police say a postmortem is to be held to establish the cause of death.

At least 2000 war veterans are due to be recruited to serve under AMISOM in Somalia.
