Angry Mob Hacks Policeman in Butaleja

An angry mob has hacked a policeman who had been deployed to effect the arrest of a suspect in Butaleja district. The incident happened on Saturday at Dingo village, Nawanjofu Sub County in Butaleja district.

Juma Waya, one of the eye witnesses says that the Police Officer identified as Ayubu Kanaku had just handcuffed a resident, who had been accused of defilement when an irate mob pounced on him to resist the arrest. In an effort to scare them away, he cocked his gun, which however jammed at the time.

Two of his colleagues, among them a Crime Preventer, ran for their lives, abandoning him in the hands of the mob. During the scuffle, the suspect also escaped with handcuffs and chains on his hands.

Another eyewitness only identified as Musa says the mob beat up the police officer with clubs and hacked him with machetes.

Ayubu Kanaku is currently admitted in Busolwe Hospital, Butaleja district.

Butaleja district assistant District Health Officer Sr. Rose Achiko says the policeman has bruises all over the body and big cuts on the head and the back.
