Another Landslide Disaster Looms in Bududa

Another landslide disaster is reportedly looming in Bududda district. One of the hills over looking Nametsi village, where more than 300 people died last week has developed a huge crack. Maj. Gen Julius Oketta, the coordinator of disaster response in the office of the Prime Minister, says the hill currently home to hundreds of people has developed a huge crack triggered off by heavy rains. Oketta says cracking sound probably of breaking rocks can be heard several meters away from the hill. He appeals to local leaders in Bugisu to mobilize the people residing in the landslide prone areas to avert another disaster. // Cue in: "What we have seen today..." Cue out "...until when the thing falls" // A team of local leaders led by Wilson Watira, the LC5 Chairperson of Bududa, has been on a mobilization tour encouraging people living in high risk areas, to relocate to the temporally resettlement center. But most of the people living up on the mountain are not willing to be relocated. 55-year-old Wilson Wanangudu, is one of the hundreds of people that have refused to relocate to outside Mt. Elgon region. // Cue in: "I' am 55-years-old..." Cue out "...used to the weather of this area" // This week, Government announced that it's looking for money to purchase land to resettle landslide victims from Mt. Elgon region.
