Unknown assailants this morning gunned down another Muslim cleric Sheikh Muhammad Kiggundu.

The former member of the Allied Democratic Front (ADF) and leader of the Jamat Dawa Salafiya was killed together with his body guard, Sergent Stephen Mukasa.

Sheikh Kiggundu,  a soldier at the rank of Major was gunned down in Masanafu trading Center, Rubaga Division while being driven home in his car.

The Deputy Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Paul Kangave confirmed the shooting. "Our officers are still at the scene of crime, we shall avail the details later," Kangave told Uganda Radio Network.

A source at the trading center said the shooting which started from the valley area of Masanafu was orchestrated by two men dressed in black. They were traveling on a motorcycle."

"The assailant first shot the body guard and moments later moved closer and shot the Sheikh who was seated inside the motor vehicle," narrates the source.

Sheikh Kiggundu apart from his routine roles as a Salaf leader and a soldier has been a crusader against extremism in religion appearing everyday on Pearl FM, a Muslim radio station as a panelist on a programme called Mimbari Special.

He was husband to Sylvia (Sophia) Namutebi, also known as ''Mama Fiina', the leader of traditional healers in Uganda.

The shooting comes amid the trial of 14 men, suspected to have masterminded the killing of Muslim clerics in the districts of Kampala., Wakiso and Mayuge over the last two years.

Those on trial include the leader of the Tabliq Sect; Sheikh Yunus Kamoga, Sheikh Siraj Kawooya, Sekayanja Abdulsalaam alias Kassim Mulumba, Sematimba Abdulhamid Mubiru, Jingo Rashid, Sekitto Twaha, Kakande Yusuf alias Abdallah and Sheikh Murta Mudde Bukenya.

Others are Hakim Kinene Muswaswa, Amir Kinene, Sheikh Kalungi Fahad, Hamuza Kasirye, Musa Issa Mubiru and Iga George William alias Hamuza.

They are accused of indiscriminately involving themselves in the attack on Sheiks; Ibrahim Hassan Kirya, Abdulkdir Muwaya and Mustapha Bahiga, and the attempted murder of Ssonko Najib, Umar Swadiq, , Mohamoud Kibaate, Haruna Jemba and Omulangira Kassim Nakibinge.

The crimes were allegedly committed between December 2013 and June 2015 in Kampala, Wakiso and Mayuge districts.
