Sheikh Zubairi Kayongo has been confirmed as a rival Mufti for a Muslim faction opposed to the leadership of Uganda Muslim Supreme Council under Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje. The break away faction announced today at Kibuli mosque that it was formerly seceding from the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council, the national Administrative body of Muslims in the country. Sheikh Kayongo, a former Deputy Mufti, was sworn in together with his two Deputies Sheikh Abdul Hakim Sekimpi and Habib Kabasa. He has urged Sheikhs in the breakaway faction to remain calm as they carry out the immense task of uniting their followers. The newly appointed leaders have vowed to unseat sheikh Mubajje and his Executive. According to Sheikh Obeid Kamulegeya the Chairperson of the College of Sheikhs in the rival faction the confirmation ceremony of Kayongo is a turning point in the history of Islam in Uganda. He says that it is the first step to securing the Administrative seat of Uganda Muslim Supreme Council at Old Kampala. Similar sentiments have been echoed by Sheikh Nuhu Muzaata who insists that time is up for sheikh Mubajje to give way for a new leadership. Muzata a key complainant in a fraud case against sheikh Mubajje that was dismissed at Buganda road court heads the department of Propagating Islam. According to MP Hussein Kyanjo, the Mufti Mubajje has agreed to an amicable settlement of the disagreement between him and his rivals. But Sheikh Hassan Kirya says the faction will only agree to dialogue if the Muslim properties are returned. Kirya argues that the absence of a Council of Sheikhs is a key contributor to the ongoing contention.
