Army Court to Rule on July 5 Kasese Attack Suspects

The Army General Court Martial is scheduled to deliver its ruling this morning in the case against 23 suspects of the July 5th 2014 Kasese attacks.  It follows a decision by the suspects to invoke their right to remain silent instead of defending themselves against the accusations.   

The suspects are facing 12 counts of murder, four counts of attempted murder and illegal gun possession. Details of the case are that on July 5, 2014 while at Bigando village in Kitswamba sub-county in Kasese district and at the Weigh Bridge along Kasese-Mbarara road, the suspects killed 12 people and stole a fire arm.

The suspects pleaded not guilty to the charges. They are represented by Major Ronald Iduli and Geoffrey Sibendire. Major Ronald Kakurungu, the 2nd Division Army Spokesperson told URN this morning that the army court martial was due to convene at Rwenzori square in Kasese town to deliver judgment.
 
Kakurungu said the Army General Court Martial chairman Major General Levi Karuhanga and his team spent two days in analyzing the submissions of both parties are were ready to make judgment.
 
The same court acquitted 30 suspects who were facing similar charges saying their names were not mentioned by the prosecution witnesses. Some of those who were released include Noah Nzaghale, the premier Rwenzururu Kingdom and his junior ministers Aganatia Katya, Eri Thembo Nyakango, Jackson Muliro and Joshua Baluku.
