Campaigns for the Aruu North parliamentary by-election have been extended by one day giving candidates additional time to traverse the constituency. The extension, announced by the Electoral Commission comes ahead of President Yoweri Museveni's planned visit to the constituency later today.

The president is expected to address two political rallies in support of the National Resistance Movement-NRM party candidate James Nabinson Kidega. The rallies will be held at Pajule Primary School and Atanga Primary School.

The campaigns were initially planned to end yesterday, Monday.

Pader District Returning Officer Joseph Omona says that the extra day was added upon request by the candidates in the race to compensate for the disruption of campaigns, caused by a meeting held on March 16 between the commission and contenders. The meeting was convened by the Electoral Commission to address emerging challenges in the field.

The Aruu North Parliamentary seat fell vacant after the Court of Appeal upheld a High Court ruling nullifying the election of Lucy Achiro Otim as the area legislator. The ruling was based on a petition filed by National Resistance Movement (NRM) party candidate James Nabinson Kidega citing indulgence in electoral malpractice in the February 2016 parliamentary election.

Achiro had won the race with 8,599 votes defeating Kidega who polled 8,597, with a difference of two votes. The two are battling again alongside five other contenders. They include Onen Bernard Ologi Justin Boswell Oryema, Henry Komakech Banya, David Ojera and Francis Nyero Helton Lakile.

Elections will be held on Thursday April 6.
